Accra- Ghana, December 3, 2018 – In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 officially declared the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disability on December 3rd to increase the awareness and understanding of disability issues, as well as, to mobilize support for the rights and well being of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, HFFG calls on governments, its partners, stakeholders, the media and individuals go through their programs and activities focus on “empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality” at community and national level.
The sustainable development goal 10 in relation to the 2030 Agenda focuses on reducing inequalities within and among countries. This implies that legal documents such as the Disability Act need to be prioritized and implemented. All public facilities, for instance, should be disability-friendly. A person’s disability must not hinder his or her right to quality education and access to quality health care and justice.
As a member of the Ghana Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRHR) Alliance for Young People, Hope for Future Generations is presently carrying out the Get Up Speak Out (GUSO) project. The GUSO project, with support from Simavi in the Netherlands, seeks to empower young girls, including persons with disabilities, to voice out and stand up for their rights, while demanding for improved sexual and reproductive health services.

The observance of the International Day of Persons with Disability serves as a platform to create awareness and advocate for equality and the rights of the disabled to ensure their full inclusion in the society. This can be achieved by first breaking down barriers such as discrimination, misconceptions, and attitudes that prevent having an inclusive society and world as a whole.
In attaining the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which pledges to “leave no one behind”, the theme for this year’s observance of the International Day for Persons with Disability is, “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. The theme serves as a pivot to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development by empowering persons with disabilities to accelerate the attainment of inclusive development and the 2030-sustainable development agenda.
To eliminate disability-based discrimination, we call on the President of Ghana, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and all other Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government to work together to create accessible cities, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems and accessible and safe public spaces for all, including persons with disabilities.
